Ben Platt Accused of Cutting Interview Short After Being Asked About 'Nepo Baby' Debate

Rolling Stone seemingly learned the hard way that Ben Platt doesn’t want to talk about the “nepo baby” debate.

If you somehow missed it, last year the internet was shocked to learn that so many stars had family connections in the industry. New York Magazine listed out several examples, including Ben, who is the son of Legally Blonde and The Little Mermaid producer Marc Platt.

The topic came up during a recent interview with the publication, and it seemingly led to the conversation being cut short.

While the interview was largely about Ben‘s forthcoming movie Theater Camp, the topic did shift to his family and the “nepo baby” debate.

“Because my parents gave us the opportunity to pursue whatever we wanted to pursue and didn’t necessarily put us in gender-specific boxes or force anyone to do sports that wasn’t feeling sports, I think I had the opportunity that a lot of people don’t have, which is that I was allowed to get bitten by a theater bug,” Ben said when asked how having a connection to the industry might have impacted his decisions growing up. “They let me try what I wanted to try.

He continued, saying, “I think I owe a lot to that upbringing, and obviously musical theater brought me to my potential husband. So I certainly owe a lot to the openness and the artistic kind of freedom that was in my household.”

However, when the follow-up question shifted to the New York Magazine cover, Ben was quick to shut it down.

“We’re going to skip right over that if we can,” he said. Rolling Stone noted that his publicist then requested that the conversation remain focused on Theater Camp.

The interview continued. However, the outlet noted that the publicist cut in again after a few more questions to cut things short. At the time of publishing, Ben does not appear to have commented on the shorter-than-expected conversation.

So many other stars have weighed in on the “nepo baby” debate.
